California Real Estate License Requirements (DRE)
The California Department of Real Estate (DRE) mandates 135 hours of college-level coursework before you can sit for the state exam. It is widely considered one of the most rigorous licensing processes in the country.
The 3 Required Courses (135 Hours)
Before applying for the exam, you must complete three specific college-level courses. Each course is 45 hours.
| Course Name | Requirement | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Real Estate Principles | Mandatory | 45 |
| Real Estate Practice | Mandatory | 45 |
| Elective (e.g., RE Finance, RE Appraisal) | Choose One | 45 |
Warning on Course Timing
The DRE enforces a strict time-in-seat rule. You cannot complete a 45-hour course in less than 18 days. Therefore, the absolute minimum time to complete all 135 hours is 54 days (18 days × 3 courses).
